I have a treadmill. Sammy has a back yard. My treadmill broke. Sammy’s backyard still works, although if I don’t mow it pretty soon, it will be added to the list of recently discovered rainforests. Sam has a trail along the fence but just like my treadmill, it is an endless path to nowhere. The sun brought some welcome light and warmth to Oregon today and I desperately wanted to go for a hike. My favorite hiking area however is an hour’s drive from here – no time for that today. So, I grab Sam and his leash and we head off to walk the property line around the thirty acre pasture. I’m not sure how far that is in distance but it’s not a difficult hike – a little up, a little down. It didn’t take but 200 yards for adventure to find us. Ponies – I have ponies, lots of them and they are very friendly critters (I call them My Pocket Ponies), unless you’re a dog. Shetland Ponies hate dogs. You see, Sam, this is why I keep telling you not to bark at them through the fence. One day, they will get even with you. And this was the day they tried. Sam and I not only got lots of exercise, we got pretty good at evasion techniques while we were at it. Some hints for us to remember in the future are things like, blackberry bushes do not make friendly hiding places and if we go the other way the next time we try this, the long stretch with no cover at all – it’ll be on the downhill side.
Sammy was actually happy to see his backyard when we got home and I’m thinking about perusing the want ads for a replacement treadmill. Being outdoors in the real thing is better than a gym (or backyard) ultimately, but you need a place to practice your moves!
